Patna Metro Set To Roll This Independence Day

Bihar is ready to kick start its own urban rail system this 15th of august 2025 on the day of independence so people of Bihar this time get to celebrate two events together.

The much-anticipated Patna Metro is being built at a massive cost of ₹13,000 crore under the Patna Metro Rail Corporation, a joint venture between the Government of India (GOI) and the Government of Bihar (GOB).

The project is being built in two primary corridors, both designed to reduce traffic congestion and enhance daily commuting: First Line 1: The East-West Corridor( red colour), The Route: Danapur Cantonment → Khemnichak → Kankarbagh → Mithapur → Khemnichak → Khajpura → Patna Junction → Khali Chak, Length :16.86 km, and it cross around 14 station which connects the city’s commercial zones and populated residential areas.

The Second line which is Line 2: North-South Corridor (Blue Line), The Route: Patna Junction → Gandhi Maidan → PMCH → Rajendra Nagar → New ISBT, Length : 14km, and this route cross around 12 station which connects the city center to the newly developed outer transport zones.

To support the maintenance and operations of the metro system, a 76-acre depot is being developed. This depot will house maintenance sheds, control centers, parking, and training facilities, all essential for the smooth functioning of the network once it's live. Alongside Patna’s metro development, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are also being prepared for modern urban transport systems in three other major cities of Bihar — Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, and Darbhanga. In Muzaffarpur, the DPR focuses on easing congestion through a proposed corridor connecting key areas like the Railway Station, Motijheel, and MIT College. Bhagalpur’s plan aims to improve daily travel by connecting places like Tilkamanjhi, Bhagalpur Junction, and Sabour. Darbhanga’s DPR outlines a new route linking the airport with Laheriasarai, Tower Chowk, and the railway station to meet the rising demand for better connectivity. These initiatives are in the early planning and approval stages and are part of Bihar’s larger push toward cleaner and smarter urban mobility.

Despite high hopes and a grand vision, the project has faced delays. Land acquisition, slow-paced construction, and funding bottlenecks have kept the work slower than planned. Even with these circumstances, the trial runs are scheduled to begin in July, with the priority section between Malahi Pakri and Patliputra ISBT set for inauguration on August 15. This is much needed because of the increasing urban population, rising vehicle congestion, and pollution. The Metro promises a much-needed shift toward modern, fast, and clean public transport and also will reduce travel time and offer a safe, reliable alternative to rickshaws and buses.

So the countdown has officially begun , Patna is all set to board its first ride into a smarter, faster, and better-connected future. The metro isn’t just a transport upgrade, it’s the start of a whole new journey for the city.
