The truth behind the monument of love; The Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal was built by the famous Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his third wife Mumtaz. The beautiful monument built is now recognized as the seven wonders of the world. The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage". It is regarded by many as the best example of Mughal architecture and a symbol of India's rich history.

Recently a new controversy has flared up that claims that there was Lord Shiva’s Temple beneath the Taj Mahal. A petition has been filed in the Allahabad High Court, seeking a fact-finding inquiry into the history of the monument, and also opening of the doors of its "22 rooms" to see "the truth. Several right-wing outfits have claimed in the past the Taj Mahal was a Lord Shiva temple. The Indian government has been dragged into a peculiar situation, whether the Taj Mahal is a masterpiece of Muslim architecture or should be converted into a Hindu temple.

What does the plea say?

The petition stated It is respectfully submitted that for many years, one controversy is at its peak which is related to the Taj Mahal. Some Hindu groups and reputable saints are claiming this monument to be an old Shiv Temple. Advocate Rudra Vikram Singh said that it is our responsibility to end controversies that lead to clashes between two religions. He also stated that the issue has divided Hindus and Muslims.

He also states that monuments of world importance must not be allowed to be the victim of a historical fraud. He called it an infringement of Indian tradition and heritage if the Taj Mahal has been wrongly and falsely identified as a mausoleum.

Why did the petition demand for all the 22 doors to be opened?

The 22 rooms of the Taj Mahal have known to be locked for security reasons. However, historians like P.N Oak believes that within these rooms of the monument lies the Temple of Lord Shiva.

In one of his books, he states the monument was built in 1155 AD and furthers the Tejo Mahalaya claim.

The Supreme court overthrew Oak’s petition to declare that a Hindu king built the famous monument, Taj Mahal.
