Journalist Mohamad Zubair held for hurting religious sentiments.

The co-founder of Alt News Mohamad Zubair was arrested on Monday by the Delhi Police on the charges of promoting enmity on religious grounds and hurting the sentiments of the netizens through a tweet.

There was a case registered against Zubair a few days back over a tweet that was posted in 2018 that had a questionable image with the purpose of desperately insulting a god of religion. Zubair was put before the court where the cops looked for a hold for his custodial interrogation saying it was necessary to solve the conspiracy. While in the court Zubair did not seem to cooperate during the inquiry. The court then decided to grand a day of police custody.

After the tweet was highlighted, his followers stepped up and created a series of controversial debates. Zubair was examined regarding the case and found objectionable; therefore, he was arrested and put before the court. The post was being retweeted and there were divisions of social media entities indulging in insult-mongering. The tweet included a picture and words against a particular religious community that was proactive in creating hatred among people which could be detrimental to the maintenance of public peace. Co-founder of Alt News Prateek Sinha said that there was no notice issued before the arrest of Mohamad Zubair and no copy of the FIR despite repeated requests. He later tweeted that Zubair is being taken to an undisclosed location which has not been informed to either Zubair’s lawyer or Prateek himself. He also mentioned that none of the policemen had their name tags on.

The arrest of Zubair by Delhi Police on Monday triggered many politicians including Rahul Gandhi and Sitaram Yechury and media body Digipub a representative body of digital news media organizations. Yechury demanded an immediate release of Zubair. Said that the Modi government is insecure by anything that exposes the fake machine of misinformation. Congress leader later tweeted that India’s few fact-checking services especially Alt News provide a vital service in our post-truth political environment rife with disinformation. To arrest Zubair is an assault on the truth he added.
