After films made on Mary Kom, Neerja Bhanot, MS Dhoni, Milkha Singh to name a few, the Indian film industry is all set to narrate the story of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on the big screen.

The Veteran Actor Anupam Kher will be seen portraying the role of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the upcoming film, titled The Accidental Prime Minister. The film will be based on Sanjaya Baru’s book, titled The Accidental Prime Minister:The Making And Unmaking of Manmohan Singh. Here’s the poster for the movie

Anupam Kher, is sported in the trademark turban, beard and glasses, looks like a splitting image of the former Prime Minister in the picture. The makers played with a black and white concept, with Anupam Kher as the former PM on the cover. Keeping the Parliament corridors in the background, the makers have also shown the shadow of a woman in a corridor, Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s character in the poster. Needless to say, Sonia Gandhi played a huge part in the party and decision-making in the government on major issues, when the country was ruled by the UPA government.

The Accidental Prime Minister is based on the book, An Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh by Sanjay Baru, the media advisor to Singh between 2004 and 2008.

The film written by the the National Award-winning Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, is being produced by Ashoke Mehta and Sunil Bohra, and directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte.

According to the poster, The Accidental Prime Minister is slated for a ‘Winter 2018’ release. However, with the CBFC now demanding an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from filmmakers who are portraying real-life characters in their films, it remains to be seen if Dr Manmohan Singh will be willing to give an NOC to the filmmakers and whether the CBFC will allow a smooth release of the film if he does not.

In an interview with  Economic Times, Anupam Kher said that he finds the role of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to be ‘extremely challenging.’

“Acting the role of anyone in contemporary history is extremely challenging, as comparisons are bound to be instant and inevitable. But as I have always revelled in challenges, right from my first film Saaransh, I look forward to the experience of portraying PM Manmohan Singh,” Economic Times quoted Anupam Kher as saying.

Anupam Kher was last seen in Shivam Nair’s Naam  Shabana co-starring Akshay Kumar and Taapsee Pannu. He will next be seen in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, directed by Shree Narayan Singh. The film also stars Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar and Sana Khan. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is scheduled to release in theatres on August 11.
